Vintage Discovery Of America

This rare vintage Salvador Dalí “Discovery of America” long-sleeve shirt is an officially licensed piece from the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, featuring one of the artist’s most ambitious masterworks. The graphic depicts Dalí’s 1958–1959 monumental oil painting, which stands over 14 feet tall and serves as a metaphorical homage to his Spanish heritage. In the artwork, Christopher Columbus is portrayed as an adolescent boy to symbolize America as a “young continent,” while the banner he holds bears the likeness of Dalí’s wife and muse, Gala, depicted as the Virgin Mary. The painting incorporates “Nuclear Mysticism” and historical references, such as the spears borrowed from Velázquez’s The Surrender of Breda, and was originally commissioned for the opening of the Gallery of Modern Art at Columbus Circle in New York.
